Principles

What this product will not do to you

Every tool in this category promises to be kind about it. Here are the specific rules Diverge is built on, and — for each one — the thing in the product that makes it true, so you can check rather than trust.

Nothing accumulates against you

There are no streaks, no overdue counters, no completion rates and no totals.

Not hidden, not opt-out: absent. Nothing in the product counts how often you came back, and nothing anywhere adds up into a number about how you are doing. A tool that can compute that number will eventually show it to you, and it will show it to you on the day you least need to see it.

What piles up while you're away can be cleared in one action, with no review and no justification asked for. That clearing is permanent — see below.

Amnesty is permanent

Once something is cleared, nothing brings it back.

This is the rule everything else rests on, so it is enforced twice. The item is marked as cleared in a way that cannot be unset, and the rule that reconciles two devices is written so that clearing always wins — if your phone cleared it and your laptop still remembers it, the phone is right.

Without that, opening the app on an old device would resurrect the pile you already dealt with, and a promise that only holds on one device is not a promise.

Nobody is ever late

The People part of the product cannot tell you that you are a bad friend.

You can say who you'd miss and roughly how often feels right. That cadence is a guess, it is yours to move, and passing it produces no overdue state, no red, and no count of how long it's been in a form that reads as a verdict.

Removing someone is a single action that also withdraws anything waiting for them, and it takes effect everywhere. That flow was written for bereavement, and it is why removal is immediate and total rather than something you have to do once per device.

Distress is never treated as a task

If what you write reads as distress, the product stops being a productivity tool.

It is not broken into steps, not scheduled, not filed under a domain, and not answered with encouragement. It routes straight to real support resources.

That check runs on your device, before anything is saved and before anything is sent — so text that trips it is never written to our database and never crosses the network at all. There is no table for it on the server, and there is no endpoint that could accept it. This is an ordering rule rather than a filter on the far side, and the order is what makes it true.

One thing, not a list

There is no list view, because the list is the thing that hurts.

Capture is fast and unstructured — a task, a worry, a name — and what comes back is one surfaced next action, sized to the capacity you said you have today. What you didn't pick is not displayed alongside it as a reminder of itself.

Coming back after a gap is normal use

The product expects the gap. It is designed around the sixth week, not the first.

Re-entry after two weeks away is a designed flow rather than an edge case: no catch-up screen, no summary of what you missed, no message about where you've been. The cadence of use is modelled on the assumption that it will decay, which is the ordinary shape of using a tool like this.

It works signed out, permanently

Not a trial. Not a limited mode.

The whole product runs on your device without an account. An account exists only to carry your data between devices — that is what it does, and it is all it does. Nothing is withheld until you make one.

If you do make one, your data leaves with you whenever you want it, and deleting the account deletes what's on the server. See Privacy for exactly what is held and for how long.

What we won't build

For completeness, so it can be held against us:

  • No leaderboards, no comparison with other people, no sharing your activity.
  • No numeric tracking in the Body domain — weights, calories and counts are restricted by design rather than left for you to avoid.
  • No notification whose job is to bring you back. Where the product nudges at all, the budget is two a day across everything — so a nudge stays something worth reading rather than noise you learn to ignore.
  • No advertising, and no selling or sharing of your data. Ever, and not later.
